The Personal Creed Project


This project is the brainchild of a teacher named John Creger, who has written a book detailing philosophy behind the project. Basically, Mr. Creger feels that the way we experience reality is based on both our past and our vision for our future. Therefore, if we can think through our past while working on our perception of the present, we can shape our futures. We're going to do a lot of writing and reflecting this year, using the characters (fictional and non-fictional) that we meet to help us in this process. In addition to these characters, we're going to think about the people who surround our lives and the contributions, both positive and negative, that they've made to our vision of the world.

Here are some of the questions we'll be asking ourselves this year:

What are the values of the characters and public figures we've met through our readings? What can we learn from them?
Who are the characters and public figures that we admire? What about them is admirable?
Who are the characters and public figures that we do not admire? Why?

After we answer these questions, we are going to work to form our personal creed statement. This statement will be a collection of your realizations and beliefs that you express through a variety of sources, both formal and informal, this year. Your end-product creed will be a statement about the way you want to live your life and the vision you have for your future. This creed will be presented through a photostory you create with images, music, and your voice. I will show you some examples as we head toward the production stage of this process.

This project is going to be our year-long focus and the end product will be made up of thoughts, observations, and realizations you've had along the way. Of course, your personal creed will be ever-changing and will be revised as you live your life. The purpose of this project is to identify where you are in your thinking at this point in your life and to give yourself a direction for your future. All I ask throughout this project is that you work as honestly as possible. Please keep in mind that you will get out of this experience what you put into it.
