This year's sophomore English class is going to focus on choices. To help narrow this broad topic, we'll be looking at the choices we've made in the past, the ones we're making now, and the ones we hope to make in the future. We will also look at who makes choices for us and the power or powerlessness we feel when we can or cannot influence those choices. Throughout the poems, plays, novels, and articles we read this year, we'll look to see the choices others have made and how they relate or do not relate to our own. For our first activity, we'll use the following poem "Choices" by Nikki Giovanni to help start our year:

if i can't do

what i want to do

then my job is to not

do what i don't want

to do

it's not the same thing

but it's the best i can


if i can't have

what i want . . . then

my job is to want

what i've got

and be satisfied

that at least there

is something more to want

since i can't go

where i need

to go . . . then i must . . .


where the signs point

through always


parallel movement

isn't lateral

when i can't express

what i really feel

i practice feeling

what i can express

and none of it is equal

i know

but that's why mankind

alone among the animals

learns to cry

Sophomore English Final

Authors we read from: William Shakespeare, Walter Dean Myers, Sandra Cisneros, Elie Wiesel.
Novels/ Plays we read: The Merchant of Venice, Macbeth, Monster, The House on Mango St., and Night.
